The story of the
Inspirational Table

The Branches were given a theme of "Let's Party" which in itself appears to be fairly straightforward. It wasn't until we started thinking about it that we found that every time we picked a theme we started drifting away from "party" and taking up the subject of a particular party.

Eventually we decided not to have a specific theme but just stick to the elements that make up a party.

Our next task was how to bring in the 5 pieces we had to depict into the theme.

  • Cake
  • Floral exhibit
  • Model
  • Pastillage card
  • Plaque

Someone said parties to them represented "pink elephants" so that was our start!

For the model we decided to have a conga line of pink elephants. Then onto the cake - we chose a stack of presents so our cake comprised five different sized cakes stacked with a gift bag on top.

The floral tribute was a champagne bottle with a mass of flowers coming out of the top to represent the bubbles.

The pastillage card was the invitation to the party and the plaque was a Bunny Band.

We hit quite a few problems putting our ideas into practice, but by the time we dressed the table for our dummy run we had overcome most of our obstacles.

The display looked very effective, particularly against our blue backdrop. We felt we had captured the theme quite well in the end.

We were lucky enough to win "Best on Inspirational Tables" for the Bunny Band Plaque which received the Charles Cliff Shield and the creator of the piece Branch Chairman, Suzanne Ware received a Certificate. This went a long way to making all the hard work and heartache worthwhile.

Inspiration for Creation 30th June 2001

Luton's 'Inspirational Table'

After months of preparation, Telford suddenly loomed before us.

On the morning of 29 June, four members in two cars, set off carrying our Branch Table exhibits.

Amazingly, both the M1 and M6 were fairly free of traffic and the weather was good for most of the journey.

We arrived to find that there had been an administrative mix up and no 'pack' awaited us. Our table had also been incorrectly allocated, but undeterred, we pressed on unpacking everything (though somewhat intimidated by a nearby red and black Chinese-themed entry, containing a stunning royal iced pagoda). However, by the time we had hung the drapes and arranged all our entries, (the only casualty of the journey being a broken leaf), we were encouraged that our table looked quite impressive - the theme of Let's Party worked around conga-dancing pink elephants!

Though our table raised lots of smiles amongst passing visitors and the judges comments were complimentary, unfortunately it did not secure a prize, but very deservedly, an item of bas relief work, completed by Suzanne Ware, our Chairman, was awarded the Inspiration Table 'Best Plaque' trophy. This really raised our spirits and the smile on the face of the BSG's Honorary President, as she presented the award, had to be seen to be believed (could anyone have guessed that Mary is a member of Luton Branch?).
